Hm, well, my previous reply got bitbucketed, so anyway.

Personally I use GIMP for the crossfire image editing these days. I've
written a Crossfire GIMP palette, so you can choose from it, or if you run
operations on the image leaving you with non-CF palette colors, you can
do a palette merging on save, so it will transpose colors to the right
palette.

The current method I've been using uses .xcf originals with layering to
allow me to use template structure frames for the objects and then
basically just colorize, add texture and details. That way the same basic
object can be used for several different images with little work. 

And again, please remember, if you're making images, please do follow the
guidelines for perspective (there's a file in the distribution describing 
the standards), shading, wind, etc. Mismatches there gives a rather...
surreal impression. And also, follow the naming standards, since a lot of
the tools depend on them to work right.
