Perl Question

We have an older (1996) counter script that's going on the blink.

I don't know where to begin, except to study it tonight(it's not that
long), but as I scanned it quickly just now, I noticed places where it uses
chop where I would have used chomp.

Does anyone know when chomp came into existence??
---Was it added in Perl 5???

(I don't see it in a 1991 version of Wall/Schwartz "Programming Perl". But
it is listed in the 1996 or second edition.)
