ls --color and $HOME/.dir_colors

According to /etc/DIR_COLORS I can copy  /etc/DIR_COLORS  to $HOME/.dir_colors
and override the system defaults.

This does not seem to work. Running /bin/ls through strings, I do not find
.dir_colors. 

So, am I left to setting colors via the env variable?
