I noticed the uswest.net in your email address. Are they also your
DSL and ISP service provider? If so then I know some people who are
pleased with the service. I understand for a few extra $$ per month
they will even set you up with static IP addresses.

Otherwise, and specifically towards your query, I think that whether
bridge, or PPP would work would be dependant on what your service
provider requires. My provider sets up it's modems using a bridged
configuration. The result of this is that I see a bunch of broadcast
coming down the wire from other peoples systems. They are mostly
windows clients sending out netbios name service requests. It's funny
for a while but gets old fairly quick.

But really, you should configure your modem the way your service
provider recommends. As for the difference a PPP type connection would
make is really dependant on how it's configured. Would you have a
routed network, or instead use proxy arp to make your node appear on a
larger subnet? This is really up to your ISP.
