Believe it or not - it matters what program you use to partition your disk
also.  Use cfdisk instead of fdisk.  cfdisk will set the apparent geometry
in such a way as to be more compatible with systems that have geometry
restrictions in the BIOS.  I am not sure of the details as to why, but it
has worked for me in the past.
