Your box is timing out on DNS requests and/or reverse name lookups. Try
setting up things in /etc/hosts or run a caching only DNS server.

Same thing for your friend. Things worked fine because he was on the 'net and
was able to resolve hostnames. Drop the DSL link and DNS goes with it.
