How about a Perl script along the lines of:

my $cmd = q[smbclient //process/c <password> -c 'ls /bin/running.txt'];
my $output = `$cmd`;
if ($output =~ /not found/i) {
print "File not found.\n";
} else {
print "File exists.\n";
}
