I have an IBM Thinkpad 380D that I bought new in Sept 97.
Specs:
- P5-150MMX/80M/2G/8x CD
- 12.1 TFT Neomagic 128ZV video (does 800x600 on LCD, up to 1024x768 on
external monitor; the color display is better then anything I've ever
seen on a Linux desktop; wasn't supported when it was new but in about
6 months, XF86_SVGA server was supporting it.
- on-board CS4232 sound (I use commercial OSS $20 for sound
- built in cd and floppy, both can be used at same time; although does
not boot off cdrom.
- lithium ion battery lasts about 2.5 hrs.
The hard drive is a little small, but I just NFS mount one of my other
systems for backups and storing large files. I run Linux exclusively on
it and I'm still only using about 1.5GB. I've been very happy with it.
Depending on what you want to do with it, you could get by getting a
slightly older model, as with most things in linux, the hardware is more
likely supported. Plus it will be cheaper and linux plays nicer with
older hardware. I payed close to $4k for mine new factoring in the 2
pcmcia cards (56k modem & nic) and saw a similar model at the computer
sale this last weekend for under $1200. You might check
http://www.laptopmall.com I think they're local too.
