Are you using the 2.2.12 kernel package that is part of potato? If so you
might try running "modconf" as root and look under "misc" for a module for
your sound card. I don't have potato here where I can check but it might be
there.

In slink they left out a great many modules presumably to save space on the
install floppies but in potato I don't know....

Also I believe egcs is the new default compiler in potato and I haven't had
any problems with it compiling 2.2.12
