You need to have a smbpasswd file.  "man smbpasswd"

smbpasswd is used to activate users to use smb shares.  It also encodes
lanman 2.x hashes for authentication.  The reason is that the hash that nt
uses to auth with samba wont work with the existing passwd hash.

Check out smbpasswd.

If you cant get it to work I live on campus and can help out sometime if
needed.  I work for the U anyhow.
