RE: [TCLUG:15440] tape backup

Hi All,

I use Exabyte Mammoth 8900 drives, both internal and external. The tapes
are expensive, running between $55 and $85 each, and hold 20G uncompressed.
The drives can be had on ebay for less than $1000 on a regular basis. They
are expensive, but fast and reliable.

For lowest drive and media cost, DAT drives are the way to go. <flame
resistant suit on> They aren't as reliable or fast as newer 8MM or DLT
drives, but they are significantly cheaper.

Also, don't underestimate the importance of quality backup and restore
software along with proper configuration and testing. It doesn't matter how
fast or reliable the tape drive is if the software gets misconfigured and
doesn't write the correct data to the tape.

Thanks,

Jim

Subject:	[TCLUG:15440] tape backup

Can anyone recommend a tape backup external SCSI drive that uses 8 MM
tapes and where I can get one locally if possible. I have never used one
before and need one at work and am dealing with CDW and they are quoting
$4000 -$1500 sytems. I was recommended an Exabyte 8700, although it is
about a year old, does anyone know what the newer model would be or
something in the same ball park? Thanks.

(to tell you where i am coming from on expeirnce with this stuff,
I didn't even know anyone used tape backups anymore, I "assumed" it was
an ancient technology, so I know absolutely nothing)

Erick
