daniel hit my point exactly. having the programs compiled for your specific
processor type is enough of an incentive for me, as well as like he said, its
kinda cool to be able to go in and change things or just get an idea of the
program. (i think i'm about 70/30 as far as failure/sucess rates go on that,
but hey, that's what learning is for :). and lastly, compiliing against
libraries you already have usually creates very little headaches compared to
rpm's and dependency issues (from my experiences anyway).
