Re: [TCLUG:16382] USWest offers IDSL
Whoever quoted you $700 activation must have the fine Brazilian stuff.
The most expensive start-up cost that I remember from the presentation
was the modem at $336. The activation is the cost of the line install,
I think it's closer to $100 or $200.
iDSL monthly will be around $60 / month, a little cheaper than ISDN.
Remember though, the ISP charges should be less than an ISDN dial-up.
Those of you balking at what a crappy deal this is comapred to RADSL,
you're right. However less than 20% of the 14 state region is RADSL
qualified because of the 18kft limit, so to some people looking at
high-speed access out in the boonies, this is the only option. You'd
save a little bit / month over regular ISDN dial-up. The coverage
should be better than cable, since 70% of US-West's customers are iDSL
capable.
It's also great for businesses that aren't RADSL qualified and would
normally need a dedicated or unmetered ISDN for high-speed.
Since this is still an ISDN line with different L2 I must post the
infamous warning: don't lick the wrong side of the NT-1.
