I haven't been able to find it in either of the NeXT FAQs on Peanuts.

When I start up, BOOTP times out.  After entering the 'bsd' command, it runs
through the startup sequence until it gets to the point of setting up
NetInfo, which fails.  Then it sleeps until I hit Ctrl-C, finishes the boot
sequence, asks me for language/keyboard information (on every boot -
shouldn't this be saved?) and then comes up with root already looged in
(presumably because I shut down without logging out).

I previously used the GUI config apps to assign an IP to the machine and
ifconfig shows that address (10.0.0.2) assigned to en0, but the netmask
somehow ended up as ff0000ff(?!).  It's not even able to ping itself...

Never mind...  That odd netmask prompted me to do a little digging in /etc
and I discovered that hostconfig listed a netmask of 10.0.0.255 - I guess I
must've put in the broadcast address where the simple net setup util wanted
the netmask.  Changing it to 255.255.255.0 worked like a charm - it started
up without trying BOOTP, without complaining about NetInfo, and without
asking for language settings.  It can now ping itself, other machines on my
network, and segfault.org with no problems.  I can also ping it from this
box.

Thanks for the help - if I hadn't been sending this, I probably never
would've noticed the netmask problem...

Is there anything else I should do (other than getting the Y2K 'patch' from
Apple)?
