try typing 'make bzImage'
don't forget to copy it out of /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot and make sure
that, if you are using lilo, you edit the /etc/lilo.conf file and run lilo
before rebooting
BTW, I am a slightly more advanced newbie, and not a guru by any means.
However, I have recompiled my kernel many, many times so I am familiar with
that at least :)
