well.. there are simple command line applications that you could just stick
into a cron-job to write stats to a log file.. also you could hack some of it
to be monitored grapically with MRTG. 

oh.. and i discoverd a prolbem with cable modems... they can be droped offline
with a simple ping packet.  it's a flaw in the integrated modem that is part of
the cable box.
