Appears to be fixed now. This is what we did :

swapoff -a
mkswap -c /dev/hdb5
swapon -a

There is only one swap space so the "-a" seemed fine. And then we could see
the swap space start to get used.

The problem of swap space not getting used started after StarOffice 4.0
crashed and then refused to run again until after it was reinstalled. Could
that break or mess up the swap device somehow ?
