I know that especially with the 3com Virge card (and possibly other cards
as well) there was a condition that would cause the MAC address to show as
0's.   The fix was to unplug the computer (really, turning it off wouldn't
work), then plug it back in and restart.   I had this problem on an HP
Vectra VL6.8.  I fought with it for a long time before I found a web page
that described the problem, and sure enough; that fixed it...
