losing mouse in X11

I'm running XFree86-3.3.3 under RedHat 5.2.  I've had this problem under
 RedHat 5.1 and 5.0 as well.  

Many times my mouse just freezes, the keyboard still works, but the mouse 
doesn't move.  If I switch consoles and then back it almost always fixes it.
  If it doesn't work on the first switch then the second makes it work.  
I've tried turning off gpm and that doesn't seem to help.  Does any one have
 any suggestions?
