server upgrade

Hi *, (I saw that on another list I'm on.)

I'm going to upgrade my network server in the next few days, and I'd like
to check and make sure that I've got the procedure right. As I understand
it, I should copy /etc and /var to someplace in my /home partition so that
I can easily get everything running again after the upgrade. I'll
probably actually do a reinstall because I'd like to see if I can do it
by myself. It's a RedHat system, BTW. First, a couple questions:

1. Is there anything special to watch out for when doing the cp to
preserve /etc and /var?

2. Will the user accounts be accessible automatically when I finish the
upgrade, or do I have to 'reattach' them somehow to the rest of the
system?

3. I'm going to change the domain name while I'm at it. (It's not been
registered yet.) Currently, its science.isd197.k12.mn.us. The sysadmin
wants me to use science.sibley.isd197.k12.mn.us. Where do I need to make
this change? Is it just that one setting in linuxconf?

4. I assume that the other network settings won't be too difficult. I'll
just need to know the default gateway, IP address of the server, netmask,
right?

Am I missing anything? I'd appreciate any other pointers that any of you
may have.
