In fact - a better question might be: If you were to re-write Netrek 
from scratch today - why WOULDN'T you use Flash?

I think people think of Flash as a complex animation suite. But, take a 
look at this:

Flex is somewhat like Adobe's re-write of Java mixed with rich user 
interface and rendering capabilities. That you can write a program in 
Flex and have it run in Flash, where Flash is generally available for 
most platforms and is often already installed on people's computers, 
makes it a great target.
