Well it really depends on your use and the ammount youre willing to spend. If money is no consern then I would sudjest SAN. It has the highest reliability, however it's also the most expencive. You could get a Photon from SUN that will hold 18 10,000 rpm drives, for about $64,000 (with out the drives.) You could probably get a JBod from Rorke Data for much less than that. With SAN there is no distance limitation, unless your storage device is more then 10km away, plus you get 1gb/sec transfer rate, thats ofcource if you go with fibre. For shorter distances, you can use a copper serial cable. Although its a bit slower, its still faster than SCSI. ____________________________________________________ If what I say offends you then it was probably meant to do so Andrew Nemchenko drew at usfamily.net Home: 651-681-8572 Work: 952-932-4081 Pager: 612-264-1737 http://www.kuzmich.cjb.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Kent Schumacher <kent at structural-wood.com> To: <tclug-list at mn-linux.org> Sent: Tuesday, October 17, 2000 10:58 AM Subject: [TCLUG:22757] Raid and other storage stories > I'm brainstorming (with myself!) storage solutions for a > Linux based X-Windows applications server. > > What are people out there using? > > Internal SCSI RAID, external SCSI attached RAID, NAS, SAN, ???. > > How do you rate things for performance, price, and reliability? > Are there any things to be concerned about under linux? > > I'm not looking for definitive HOWTO's, I'm just wondering about > the groups personal experiences and opinions. > > Reliability is probably primary.
