Dito. Would be silly to drop K56Flex now that V.PCM is closing in.
This would mean they would have to implement X2 on their chips
_now_ and V.PCM when it comes which would actually slow down V.PCMs
coming. The only target can be to get rid of _both_ proprietary
systems ASAP, not to change in one for another.

Which is typical standardization behavior - nobody should have too
much advantages. When ISO-8859-1 was designed it was "inspired" by
DEC MCS, but to not give DEC too much advantages 4 characters were
changed. V.PCM (AFAIK it already has this name, may be the ITU assigns
some number to it but V.PCM is the widespread used term for the standard
to come) will be similar - it will be a best-features merger of the
two (and if that means it's 99% x2 or 99% KFlex it will be made in-
compatible for abovementioned reasons).

If it would only be there already...
