If you Max is "locking up", what assurance do you have that the Max will respond to SNMP commands when "locked"? In your place, I would guess "none". <snip> One could also plug an external modem into the "console" port of the Max, and put in a single analog phone line to support last-ditch administration of the Max via direct dial-up connection. (The line can also be handy in cases where a tech wants to call the NOC from the site.) Thanks for the insights how to provide 100% uptime in a real hi-tech environment :-) But jokes aside: You made a very good point right at the start - how do I know that the MAX would still respond to SNMP? Hey, I don't know - I am not using SNMP....BUT the MAX still responds to analog calls! Just found out. So I can reach it and press the button. It's just that doing it interactively sometimes is just too much. I tried scripting but that didn't succeed because there was no "default" prompt. My term emu (Delrina Wincomm) is otherwise excellent but needs a "default prompt" to find out when to end the script...too much hassle to find this one out. One nice guy from DownUnder (Dean Frye <dfrye@ascend.com.au>) sent me a telnet script. Worked with UNIX (eh, IRIX) for about 8 years but would have never guessed that telnet could be used that way: (echo loginname; echo PWD;...)|telnet I'll try it out today. Thanks for your ideas. P.S. Wasn't there a _third_ guy in the world who would think "awk" in the first place and not "perl" :-> Cheers, Dr. W.
