(ASCEND) Ascend Radius and Shadow Passwd

All,
Looking for some hints on getting the Ascend Radius working with shadow
passwords. I'm running RH 5.1

If I set everything up to use a "users" file in /etc/raddb then it works
and authenticates. If I try "UNIX" it rejects the call.

I tried compiling radiusd with -DNOSHADOW, -DSHADOW, and with the tag
erased. Same results. 

I feel that radiusd is working, my ascend is talking to the radiusd
program correctly, but when referencing the /etc/passwd file I'm just
not set up correctly.
