(ASCEND) Crazy connect speeds
I am using a Zoom PCI 56K HCF Faxmodem with the advanced settings
+MS=V90 in the modem config., and the latest and greatest .inf update
from Zoom with Windows98 os. I followed the instructions for the upgrade
"TO THE LETTER" and since then have experienced difficulties. I tried
the connection with and without error control on, no difference.
I live 16 miles from the POP and am not sure how far from the nearest
switch. I'm dialing into a MAX 6000 running ver 6.1.3+.
The problems are:
1. I usually have to try to connect 3 to 5 times before it will even
authenticate. Most of the time it responds "The computer your dialing
is not answering, try ..."
2. 90% of the time when I connect, it is between 19200 - 26400, but
the other 10% I connect 38667 - 46667, these are not just reported
speeds., In actual file transfer the lower connects download approx. 2.1
kb/sec and the higher connect speeds download approx. 4.9 kb/sec. These
downloads are from a UNIX server located at the POP.
This is maddening. Is this a hardware, system, or telco problem? Any
help in what to look for would be appreciated.
