Having been down the road to installing new firmware, I find myself never
even looking at Ascend's web site.  In a word, it sucks.

By accident, I found that you don't even need the r* loads.  Just the f*.

Steps I take for upgrades:

1. retrieve the needed load to my tftp server (ftik.m40 in my case)
2. tsave
3. fsave 
4. tload
5. fsave again
6. nv
7. after reboot, repeat steps 4-6 once to get the extended load
8. check configuration
9. go have a smoke


IIRC, the step from 5.x to 6.x.x does require reconfiguring, but it may be
there I just didn't take the time to save the config in the first place.

YMMV, but this works great for me.
