Switching power supplies are funny things. Our guys were using old PC
cabinets as disc enclosures. Discs were using mostly 12V, and they
were using more than twice the rated 12V Amps. So I phoned
the power supply manufacturer, and asked whats the expected life
of those power supplies. They said: only the total wattage counts.
It doesn't really matter what you do, but you just must use some 5V
(for the regulation.) We didn't loose a single power supply.
We *have* almost literally burned (only smoke) a MAX E1.. we lost 49 modems
( 11 survived ) and a chassis. Max spare modems were Really expensive..
so I bought a PM3 with 60 modems and a new MAX chassis for the
leftover MAX modems.
