(ASCEND) P50 and IDSL

Dave just told me about this list; I had no idea it existed, or I'd've asked
my question here instead of posting to ba.internet ;). And I hope it's not
one that's been asked a few hundred times before. :)

I've got a ~2 year old P50 (bought it in, uh, January 1996 -- although I ended
up exchanging it a month or two later because the original one wouldn't boot
without something hooked up to the serial console); I have been looking for a
new ISP, and IDSL was attractive since I already had the P50.

However, Ascend told me, today, that my p50 "simply cannot" work with IDSL,
because it requires different hardware. Now, this surprised me greatly, since
I'd read Ascend's press releases when IDSL was first announced, and the fact
that it would work with existing ISDN devices was one of the biggest things
about it.

While it is, of course, certainly possible that Ascend changed the hardware
sometime in the past two years, I'm hoping that the Ascend TechSupport guy
thought I meant ADSL, not IDSL, and that it would, indeed, work with IDSL, no
problems (if it means at 128k instead of 144k, I'll be happy -- I'd get a new
router eventually, but this would mean I could defer some of the start up
cost).

If I have to get a new router, I'm not sure that I'd go with Ascend, or even
with IDSL. (I have several other options, including a FR connection, or a T1
direct to someone, which require higher startup costs than the IDSL line --
but that was with the assumption that I wouldn't have to buy a new router.)

Thanks,

Sean.
