Sometimes (most times) any Microsoft "improvements" done to a system 
will also dick around with your dialup network settings, adding 
Bill's fave protocol NetBEUI and that paragon of efficiency, IPX
as well. It'll also check the box "log onto network" and that's
where the problem likely is.
