(ASCEND) win98 increased time to login

I have a customer who "updated" to win98.  After doing so,
the amount of time that it takes to login to a MAX tripled
(to about 90 seconds).  Has anyone else noticed this and
have a "fix"?

May God damn Microsoft, and I mean that in the most literal
way.
