Re: (ASCEND) Ticket #802135 - Disconnect Problems on 4048 with 7.0.1

I've been seeing for a couple years that IF you put 3com equipment on both
ends everything works fine. BUT if you have non 3Com in the ISP and a
customer has 3com it is hit and usually miss that they get the benefit of
faster connect speeds. The funny thing is everyone points at the ISP at not
being compatible.

I had BayNetworks and I now have all Ascend equipment. Ascend is much easier
to manage and maintain even with constant 'free' updates. With Bay you had
to pay in both time to jump through the hoops and money (and it didn't
directly support radius).

Even reports from ZD's PC Magazine have said as much but they still get
Editor's Choice awards which drives the market for all those people who
don't know any better.

It is still best to recommend Rockwell based modems to customers who want to
connect at the faster speeds. There are many more companies selling Rockwell
but some of them are changing probably due to price and think it's ok we
have V.90. But I've also seen problems with V.90 in Rockwell based modems,
changing them back to K56 does seem to be one fix since the Max supports
both.

The other problem I've encountered in obtaining V.90 speeds is with the
phone company using carrier devices which they use when the dry copper is in
short supply. It allows them to use one copper pair and service multiple
phone lines. Unfortunately their an AtoD conversion involved.

And in the it's not just V.90 problem. I know of another ISP who has changed
from supporting 3com ISDN devices because they wouldn't connect properly to
Max either (but it didn't connect very good to a 3com Total Access either)

Just my 2cents worth.

Dave
