(ASCEND) Recovering a MAX which doesnt boot

We have a MAX 4000 with TAOS 7.2.3 which worked fine, and has 
suffered something we dont know exactly, and cant boot. We tested the
boot process with no cards. This is the startup process I see on console:

UART initialized
extended load:
inflate essential .+..+.........................................
inflate expendable .........|....
starting system...
íù¥a#sc+!!!C#+#iRQJ!#+)ZkJ!)c.Ia*!K.......

Garbage comes out (a couple of lines as I see on my minicom), and then
I hear the relé click (as a normal startup). Nothing else.

Tried to issue the Esc[Esc- or Esc[Esc=, but I cannot get the machine
to work. Guess it's only valid during other phase.

Any clue ? Should I trash the MAX ?
