 I had already changed some of the XPM defines in crosssite.def.

 I believe the problem was simply solved by changing the location
commands to just straight to the following:
#define XPM_PIX
XPM_LIBDIR      = /usr/local/lib/

/* If your include files are someplace odd
XPM_INCLUDE = 
*/

 in the crosssite.def file.  This seems to fix the problem.  But it seems
taht for at least some people, getting a newer version of the library
was also needed.
