Just can't get it to work

I have been trying to play crossfire for a couple of weeks now, but am
running into many problems.  First off, telnetting to a server doesn't
work, the game gives me a message like "cant add display chinook.mcs.kent.edu:0
so I got hold of xroute and still no dice. Finally, I compiled the client, but
when I run it, I get a message saying it cant find some pixmap.

Any help would be appreciated.
