Netscape takes so long to find the IP because it tries to do DNS lookups
using the DNS in /etc/resolv.conf. So, if you are not connected to the net
(which you obviously aren't if you are trying to open netscape to connect),
you will have a long wait until it gives up on it.
The solution I have managed to get to work is to run a nameserver on my
network and add records for each of the computers. True, it is not a realy
domain on the Internet, but then netscape is able to use the resolver to get
what it is looking for.
