Ill be happy to input on your site when you finish it. I had a linux box
hooked up to cable and then I went to the U. (mmmm resnet)

The "official" stance is that they wont install it themeselves on linux.
What I find from the installers is that they dont care -- you have to set
it up -- as long as you realise that you get no phone support on operating
system issues.

from help.rr.com:

Computer Setup Information Other Requirements
MediaOne only supports the following operating systems: Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows NT Workstation 4, and Macintosh version 7.6 and
higher. If you are using any other operating systems, MediaOne cannot
offer any support on installation or trouble-shooting issues.

Please keep in mind that if your computer poses a security risk to our
network, your service will be disconnected.

Basically, its not a no-no-- it just means that they cant help you
install and stuff. Perhaps a few of us can even wow the install people.

another interesting note:

Windows 98 SE comes with a feature called "Internet Connection Sharing"
(ICS) which allows up to 5 networked computers to share a single Internet
connection. As with our policy on Home LANs you may enable the ICS feature
after MediaOne Road Runner installation, but we will not provide technical
support for the ICS configuration.

Although we do not foresee any difficulties with interaction between ICS
and the MediaOne Road Runner service, we have provided instructions on how
to determine if ICS is installed on your system.

Sounds like ipmasq should be fine too (ICS== windows nat).

and: more info on sb1200 (from what i hear its a 486-in-a-box)
http://www.gi.com/satellite/products/sb1200.pdf

and: info on the 2-way modems that should be within the next couple months
for some people, and allreday for others.
http://www.3com.com/products/cablemodem/pdf/CMI-CMX.Cnsmr_DS.pdf
(note: these are retrained to 1.5down and something slower up (.5?))

m1 does thes in the northeast and they do not @home-crippleize these
things. They are just bandwidth locked max, not some weird dl/ul caps
where you get slower d/l for uploading stuff. m1 also has been putting
out one hell of a fiber network, wehreas the local phone companies have
not.

it sounds like 10$ cheaper/month if you buy a 3com modem. :)

 <-- more info.

The install dude i talked to last week said that the 3com modems have been
super reliable too :)
