I seem to remember that vi on Slackware (elvis) and possible
vim have their own external configuration file that they need.  I seem
to remember Slackware coming with them - I just copied them into
my home directory, and things started working (I changed the name,
too).  Again, I don't remember the exact process, and I can't tell
you the exact name, because I don't have access to my Slack box
right now.  :)
