Re: [TCLUG:17326] Interesting article

The thing that worried me about this article was how these people are
installing Linux without telling anyone and sometimes when told directly not
to. Quietly installing Linux on someone's workstation doesn't seem so bad
to me. However installing it where it runs important network services seems
dangerous to me, especially to your job if you've already been told no. I'm
not saying Linux wouldn't be right for the jobs they mentioned in the
article, but the results could be bad and that's what would get press.

I personally had an experience with an IBM AIX system that was quietly
configured to compress data in some special situations, even though data
compression was expressly forbidden for this system. It took weeks of lost
$ for people to discover why several AIX systems had such trouble working
together. Obviously action was taken against the person who had done the
configuration intentionally.

The media defiantly is looking at Linux in a mostly positive light. I'd hate
to see a real disaster occur where some open source advocates secretly
installed Linux and either were inexperienced and made a mistake, or were
not aware of how other systems would react and caused a real disaster.
That's not saying that other OSes don't cause disasters every day, but
that's really not anything new :-)
