Thanks to all of you for your many helpful suggestions. I managed to pick up a very inexpensive Epson 740 and hooked it up in seconds. The HOWTOs, etc. are helpful, of course, but a flood of information (most of it about printers one can no longer purchase in conventional retail outlets), and it's been immense help having your advice.
