Do you have Esound installed?  Is there any way it could have gotten started up?
It can cause conflicts because it tries to manage the sound port for you (but
requires apps that are Esound-friendly).  I think the command to turn off Esound
is `esdctl off`.  Or something like that.  If it's not esd, I don't know.
