I think what he read dates from long ago when recompiling was often highly desirable or even necessary for various hardware, and was
applicable to basic Linux "apps" and not for proprietary stuff at all.  Things have improved so much in the last 3-5 years or so
that many old "guidelines" like that are no longer valid.
