(ASCEND) P75 and X2

I wondered how well an X2 modem would work attached to the POTS port of
a P75. My expectation was that with only 1 foot of analog (between
the modem and the P75) it should do real well.

So I attached a USR sportster to my analog port and called the USR
test line (888-877-9248). This was a pre-X2 sportster, but the idea
behind the test line is to test the line for X2 before you buy one.

Well, the short answer is that the USR test identified my line as
marginal saying I should expect degraded performance.

Whats wrong here?

Here is the full output of the test.

3 x2 is possible on this connection, but you are likely to 3
3 experience reduced performance. 3
3 3
3 Since line conditions can change from call to call, we recommend 3
3 that you make several calls to this test system to ensure an 3
3 accurate diagnosis. If you have multiple phone lines available 3
3 for use, we recommend that you try calling this system from each 3
3 line. 3
3 3
3 Performance degradation is typically caused by noise in your 3
3 local phone lines. 3
3 3
3 It's important to remember that telephone network configurations 3
3 can change, so your chances of making high-speed connections may 3
3 improve over time. 3
