All fine and good.  But, there were several configuration changes other
than just the special way of "turning off the cards and installing the new
tar image".  Think of it, even the tech support drones I talked to didn't
even know this.  Is this scary??

Good.  While you're at it, have your techs become versed on it.  I
appreciate the logistics of what they must be trained and what they must
learn via experience.  But, it's not too practical to come across this in
the field and have the technician draw a blank and put you on hold for 20
minutes while the tech support lines at the isp are ringing off the hook.
