So the modems are unable to establish carrier. Check to make sure that they
are using the current modem firmware. They may have older firmware that is
only V.90 ready rather than compliant or older V.90 software that might have
problems connecting to the MAX modems.

If the modems were installed by Gateway, then the USR site sends you to
the Gateway web site to get the update.

The customer needs to determine what the part number of the modem is
before getting the upgrade from either site. Both have links to help
you determine which model is being used.
