(ASCEND) I hate to ask questions like this...

People,

I have observed a bahavior in Pipeline routers that I can't decide is
right or not... Here's what happens...

If I were to give the ethernet port of a Pipeline router an IP of
192.168.1.1/24 and then plug it into a network with a bunch of Win95
machines on the network 192.168.2.0, all of the Win95 machines start
complaining that someone else is using their IP. Since this is a weird
thing to do in the first place, it never bothered me. I have seen
offices where people have a bunch of Sun workstations and they run two
different class C networks on the same wire and it seems to work fine.
When they do this, are they violating some RFC and it just happens to
work?

It seems to me as if the Pipeline responds to ARP requests for the world
if it has an IP that is not on the network.

I hate asking questions like this 'cos I fear someone is going to tell me
that I am an idiot and I should read RFC blah or an FAQ.... I'll take my
chances...

Steve
