E1 is a much cleaner design compared to T1. While T1 uses some esoteric
means of collecting bits over multiframes in order to do L1 signaling,
E1 is just a Frame of 32 Timeslots (Bytes). Timeslot 0 is used for L1
signaling - no exotic multiframe bit extractions necessary. All other
Timeslots are free for use. If used as a PRI to ISDN, the Timeslot 16
is utilized as the D-Channel. Furthermore, the E1 interface is practically
always a symmetrical G.703 one - just plug the correct RJ45 cable into
the socket on the max, connect to the PRI-NT and you are operative.
It's obviously been designed after some years of observation of T1 and
made better ;)

FMI, see ITU-T Recommendation I.431.
