 I think what is more confusing is the skill you get from the scroll does not
match the name of the skill itself.

 I wouldn't have much problem with the scroll of legermain if the skill once
you had it was also legermain.  But many of them have completely different
names which is pretty non intuitive.

 Bows and arrows and quick movement might be the best way.  If the map allows
you to sort of catch the rust monster behind a wall or something so you can
increase the distance, that works the best.
