What version of Pine are you using? Supposedly, version 4.x does handle
basic HTML. The only time I use Pine is for remote mail access on my
University account, and they're on 3.96, so I haven't tried it myself, but
I did hear it somewhere.
I just checked out the Pine homepage at http://www.washington.edu/pine and
confirmed it in the changelog.

If you're not using 4.x, give it a try and let us know how it goes.
If you are using 4.x, perhaps there is a mime-type setting somewhere???
