Darryl, I'd say the main reason is to identify the player's origin. 
This has been used by players for ages.  The server god can easily
disable it by removing the code.

Dave, let it be so.  Truncate the host field from the back.  I think the
full host name is visible in messages anyway, so it matters little that
it is truncated on the player info packet.
